  • As part of a new enterprise data warehouse (EDW) strategy, a national health plan PBM is looking to in-source pharmacy business intelligence analytics and reporting while incorporating new data sources
  • Highly competitive market creates a crucial need for the PBM to quickly assess, understand and manage information in order to respond to changing business conditions, retain current clients and sell to new clients
  • Current pharmacy analytics and reporting do not meet the turn-around time requirements of the competitive marketplace

Obstacles

  • The PBM data is not centralized, resides on multiple systems and data hierarchy is structured differently across clients and operating systems
  • Complex pharmacy product, benefit designs and clinical programs
  • Need to apply multiple “what if” scenarios with several different data sources

Actions

  • Developed and vetted business requirements within and between multiple business owners/departments with IT sponsorship
  • Developed a functional hierarchy approach that staged and leveraged development to meet technical constraints and business needs

Results

  • Created a build approach/roadmap that leveraged the current investments in the corporate EDW strategy while providing the ability to meet the immediate needs of the PBM business for data access, analytics, modeling and reporting.
  • Improved the ability of the PBM to internally respond to current clients inquiries and standard reporting, execute on renewal activities and model and propose to prospective clients on pharmacy benefit costs, trends and guarantees
